GENERIC VS BRAND MEDICINE

'Generic' is a term given to those medicine which have the same formula and are produced by different companies to encounter the high price of their Branded counterpart. Generic drugs are sold under the scientific name of the active ingredient which is present in the Brand medicine. Generic drugs may differ from their brand name counterparts in terms of color, flavor, preservative, shape, expiration time, packaging and labeling. However, the Generic drugs are similar with their original brand formulation in respect of purity, strength and effect. MHRA (Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) only approves a drug to be sold as 'Generic' once it has met their standards in terms of safety, quality and how effective it is. Hence, we can trust the Generics to be consumed just like brand medicines.

You can get Generics at reduced costs up to 80% as compared to the brand medicine with same active ingredient.A very good example to explain the Generics and Brand difference will be 'Viagra' which is manufactured by US based company called Pfizer with the acitve ingredient Sildenafil Citrate and is currently under patent law. However other reputed companies search as Ranbaxy, Cipla, Cadla are selling the same ingredient Sildenafil Citrate with different brand names such as Eriacta,Suhagra,Vogora etc. The active ingredient of 'Viagra' is Sildenafil and is used to treat erectile dysfunction and impotency by increasing the flow of blood to penis for a stable erection. So, the Generic medicine for treating male impotence can be sold with the same active ingredient (Sildenafil Citrate) under its Generic name at reduced costs. People also get confused by the 'Ayurvedic' medicine to be treated as Generics which is not the case. For example, 'Shilajeet' in Indian Ayurveda is used to treat erectile dysfunction and has nothing to do with Sildenafil and may have other active ingredient. So, 'Ayurvedic' medicine should not be treated as Generics as they are different in terms of active ingredient.

The popularity of Generics is high because of low cost which is due to the research and tests done for the effectiveness of brand name and are not required to be repeated for the Generics. Hence, non-brand or Generics are better than brand medicines as they are cheaper and have exactly same effect on our body as required. The questions and doubts will be clear once you take Generics instead of brand medicine for any particular disease or health condition.
